Highlights from game 5 vs. Norwalk Setember 19, 2008
NORWALK — There were flashes of brilliance as well as moments of self-inflicted adversity, but when it all shook out in the end Shelby was a 42-14 winner over Norwalk Friday evening.
The football Whippets generated 367 yards in offense and their starting defense didn’t surrender a touchdown despite being put in some tough situations in the shadows of their own goal posts due to five lost fumbles and an interception.
“When it was our starters against their starters, our kids were executing very well on both side of the ball,” said SHS coach Chris Solis as his club improved to 2-0 in the Northern Ohio League and 4-1 overall. “We did have some turnovers, but we were able to fight through that adversity and keep them out of the endzone.”
With a 35-0 bulge at the end of three quarters and no junior varsity game Saturday (Norwalk cited not having enough players), Solis substituted freely and the winless Truckers (0-5, 0-2) dented the scoreboard twice against the red and gray’s non-starters.
The victory set the stage for a huge week No. 6 battle at W.W. Skiles Field when Shelby will welcome state-ranked and undefeated Fostoria next Friday. The Redmen tuned up with a 45-22 throttling of Galion.
Norwalk mustered just 116 yards for the game and was hovering around zero yards at the end of the third period.
“I think they had negative yards when we pulled the starters and put the younger kids in to get them some work,” said Solis.
Chewing up big stretches of real estate on their first possession of the game, the Whippets marched down the field and Kyle Bailey scored from six yards away. Dylan Blevins then kicked the first of his six extra points for a 7-0 advantage at the 7:05 mark.
Two of Shelby’s nine fumbles came on their next two possessions inside red and gray territory, but Norwalk was unable to cash in. The hosts punted and then had a drive stall at the 17.
The Whippets exploded for three touchdowns in the closing 7:06 of the first half for a 28-0 cushion at the intermission.
The locals drove 83 yards and during the march Josh Ingle snagged three catches — all resulting in first downs — to set up a 19-yard strike from Zach Strine to Briton Lash.
A high snap over the Norwalk quarterback’s head was pounced on by Andre Rohde and set up a 5-yard scoring run by Bailey.
The Truckers punted and SHS took over from their own 36 with 2:07 on the clock. Colton Rhinebolt hauled in a 28-yard completion to get inside enemy territory and then Strine scrambled to the 29 and was hit out of bounds as the officials tacked on 15 penalty yards to move the ball to the 14. Rhinebolt then worked down the middle and caught the 14-yard touchdown pass.
Ball protection was still an issue for Shelby on their first series of the second quarter, but the winners overcame that mistake on their next series when Strine zig-zagged 21 yards for a 35-0 edge.
Norwalk made it 35-14 with 36 seconds remaining and on the ensuing kickoff Lash sprinted away from defenders on an 86-yard kickoff return for a TD.
Strine and Bailey rushed for 115 and 100 yards, respectively, in the game. Strine also went to the air 13 times and completed 10 for 149 yards. Ingle was his top target with five catches for 66 yards while Lash caught three balls for 38 yards and Rhinebolt netted two receptions for 44 yards.
For the third straight week, Bailey anchored the Whippets defensively with 19 tackles. Seven of his hits were for losses and he also had a 1 1/2 quarterback sacks. Brendan Argo had eight sticks to go with a sack. Rohde had six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Jon Champer, Jordan Kick and Matt Kauffman all had six tackles. The latter had the team’s other sack.
Solis said his club is looking forward to the game with Fostoria.
“We are going to have to play at championship level in order to have a chance against them. We’re looking forward to the challenge,” said the SHS coach.
