Highlights from game 8 vs. Bellevue October 10, 2008
BELLEVUE — Scoring early and often, Bellevue scalped Shelby 60-14 during a Northern Ohio League varsity football blowout Friday evening at BAF Stadium.

The Redmen, who maintained a share of the conference lead with the victory, were on the scoreboard 1:44 into the game and never looked back as they improved to 4-1 in the conference and 7-1 overall.
The locals were knocked out of first-place as their record dipped to 3-2 in NOL and 5-3 in all games.

“I don’t know what to take from this,” said Solis as the 60-point night by BHS goes down in the record books as the most points ever surrendered by the red and gray in a league contest. The previous high was 50 points (a 50-0 shellacking from Bucyrus) in 1948. “We got our butts kicked and certainly weren’t ready to play.”

The Whippet hopes deflated in the first stanza when starting quarterback Zach Strine was sidelined with a concussion.

“It killed us to not have Zach. He’s our playmaker. Take away (Bellevue quarterback Curtis) Watson and see how they would fare,” said Solis.

With more than two-thirds of their yardage coming through the air in the first seven games, Bellevue actually did the bulk of its damage on the ground against SHS by racking up 271 yards.

The home featured two backs who rushed for triple digits with Trevor Smith running 11 times for an even 100 while Jeff Roth totaled 106 on five tries.

“They beat us up front. To beat that team you have to win the battle in the trenches,” remarked Solis. “We were unresponsive to adversity and challenges from the game. We got hit hard for 48 minutes and I don’t know if we hit back because we got moved around all night.”

Bellevue drove the opening kickoff and that fueled a 24-point first quarter, highlighted by three touchdown runs, including dashes of 15 and 13 yards by Trevor Smith. The initial score was a 10-yard run by Dom DeBlase.

Shelby got as close as 14-6 on a 45-yard pass from Strine to Kyle Bailey. The remaining SHS score, which halted a string of four unanswered TD’s by Bellevue, was a 38-yard bolt by Bailey.

Bailey led all ground gainers with 107 stripes on 15 tries and was on the receiving end of two passes totaling 50 yards.

The Whippets tallied 217 yards on offense.

The Redmen, who led 32-6 at the intermission and 46-6 after three periods, scored in every quarter and cranked out 388 yards.

Jordan registered nine tackles for the locals while Andre Rohde and Jon Champer had seven apiece to go with two and one sack, respectively. Bailey and Matt Kauffman also had seven sticks while Briton Lash had an interception.

SHS will look to bounce back next Friday when its tangles with Upper Sandusky at W.W. Skiles Field in the final home game of the season for the red and gray.
